Because Granite is a porous natural stone, it will soak up liquids. It will need to be professionally sealed every few years. This helps protect it from scratches, chips, marks and stains. Granite can be cleaned if you are able to catch surface messes early enough before they become stains.
Like Granite, Marble needs to be sealed every few years. Marble is also a porous natural stone, meaning it’s easier to stain, mark, scratch and/or chip. It is also harder to clean off stains compared to Granite. Be sure to clean up surface messes as quickly as possible to prevent stains.
Quartz does not need to be sealed like Granite or Marble. Quartz is easy to keep clean and is stain resistant and scratch resistant. There is no need to worry about keeping acidic liquids off of these surfaces because they are nonabsorbent. Quartz can be damaged by sudden changes in temperature. Pot holders and trivets should be used.
All that is needed to clean Quartzite is warm water and a mild dish detergent to wipe down its surface. It is not indestructible and should be sealed to help protect from etching and stains. Sealing should be carried out by the installer when first installed, and should be re-applied approximately once per year. Spills should be wiped up as soon as possible and we recommend the use of a trivet for hot pots and pans.
Porcelain is essentially scratch proof, however, ceramic knives are the one thing that may scratch it. For quick clean ups, use soap and water, although, consistent use of soap will cause a soap scum buildup. The use of just hot water is best to wipe up spills and messes. Harsher chemicals can be used because the non-porous surface will not absorb the dangerous chemicals. Also specific brands or un-glazed porcelain will benefit from sealing at time of install.
Much like Granite and Marble, Soapstone will scratch over time giving the stone a antique look. Soapstone can be sealed to prevent this look. Some damage can be buffed out, depending on the severity. Clean minor spills with balsamic vinegar, natural soaps and warm water. All Soapstone must be treated with mineral oil. Soapstone can withstand some higher temperatures but it is best to protect it with pot holders and coasters.
